Vol. 276 No. 13

Ceisteanna — Questions. Written Answers. - Car Retail Profits.

35.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the marginal difference in the retail profits on imported assembled motor cars and those assembled within the country is used to subsidise the assembly industry.

36.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the cost price of assembled motor cars on arrival in this country and the retail price at which they are listed for sale by the motor trade.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 35 and 36 together.

There is no difference in the retail profit on cars imported fully assembled as against the same model assembled locally.

I have no evidence which would indicate that differences in retail profits on different models of motor cars are affected by the fact that some vehicles are imported fully assembled rather than for local assembly.

Any information about the cost price of imported fully assembled cars which is supplied to me by the motor importers is confidential and it would not be appropriate for me to publish it. Details of retail list prices are readily available from the trade.
