Vol. 277 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drug and Medicine Imports.

11.

asked the Minister for Health the value of all drugs and medicines imported by all health authorities in the last ten years.

Health boards and other health agencies do not import drugs and medicines. Their purchases are made from suppliers in this country and it would involve an undue expenditure of time and money to attempt to ascertain the quantities and the value of the purchases made over the past ten years which relate to imported drugs and medicines as against those produced in this country.

Is it not true that there are medicines being imported which could be successfully made here and so give employment?

It is true that there are drugs being imported but I could not say to what extent they are being imported or what they are costing.

My information is that quite a lot are being imported. Would the Parliamentary Secretary have a look at it?
