Vol. 277 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Contact with British Government.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if the Government had any contact with the British Government during the recent ceasefire; and, if so, the nature and purpose of the contact.

The answer to the first part of the Deputy's question is "yes". It would not be in accordance with practice to reveal details of such contacts between the two Governments. I may say, however, that the purpose of the contacts was to keep the Government informed of the situation as it developed, and to ensure that, in turn, their views were known to the British Government.

Could the Taoiseach say if the nature of the representations made to the British Government were designed to ensure, or try to insist, that the British Government would make some move to assist in the continuance of the ceasefire, as was mentioned at that time? Was it on these lines the representations were made?

It is not the practice to reveal the representations made but, as I mentioned in the reply, part of the exchange was for the purpose of ensuring that the British Government were aware of the views of the Government here.

Is the Taoiseach stating that the British Government kept the Government here continuously informed about current efforts to restore the truce?

There is continuing contact.
