asked the Minister for Defence the number of civilians now employed in Army barracks; and the type of work they perform.

The number of civilians currently employed for duty with the Defence Forces is 1,950 approximately.

The majority of the civilians in question are foremen, chargehands, tradesmen and labourers and allied grades engaged on the maintenance of barracks, new building work in barracks, the maintenance and repair of Army vehicles and equipment and of Naval Service vessels. They also include such grades as caretakers of unoccupied barracks, rangewardens, domestic staff and temporary nurses in military hospitals, kitchen and mess helpers, chefs and waiters in officers messes, storemen, clerks, typists, telephone operators, draughtsmen, crews of transport vessels at Haulbowline and so on.
