Vol. 277 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Traffic Road Sign.

36.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will introduce a new statutory road sign for use primarily within housing estates to warn motorists to drive carefully and thereby prevent speeding on their part which constitutes a danger to the safety of children in such areas.

I would remind the Deputy that there is a prescribed traffic sign to indicate locations where there is a specific danger to children crossing the road, for example, where the road passes a school entrance. I do not propose to prescribe a further sign as suggested by the Deputy. The erection of such further signs would not necessarily enhance the safety of the areas concerned and might indeed lead to a false sense of security on the part of children and those responsible for their safety.
