Vol. 277 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tree Replacements.

46.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will ensure that, where trees are removed because of urban road improvements, replacements will be planted.

As I indicated in reply to a similar question by the Deputy on 7th February, 1974, the question of planting replacements for trees removed because of urban road improvements is one for settlement at local authority level. My Department, however, have reminded local authorities again recently that care should be taken at all times to ensure that road improvement works are designed so as to harmonise with the environment and to cause a minimum of harm to the amenities enjoyed by local people.

Is it true that there was a tree for tree order made by the Government during the last war? Can this order be revived to ensure that the country is not denuded of trees?

Yes, that was so, but it was not in the context of road improvements but because people were cutting trees for commercial purposes. Following the Deputy's question I asked for a report of what exactly is happening. I am as anxious as he to ensure that trees are not cut down without replacement.
