Vol. 277 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - European Conservation Project.

32.

asked the Minister for Lands the extent to which his Department are co-operating with the Council of Europe in their drive to set up a European network of protected areas intended for the conservation of landscapes, habitats and species and for recreation and research.

(Cavan): I presume the Deputy is referring to the efforts being made by the Council of Europe to compile a European inventory of protected or endangered countryside areas.

My Department have been involved in the evolution of this project through membership of the Council of Europe's European Committee for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. On a more practical level the progress made to date on certain activities of my Department—for example, the establishment of a national network of bird sanctuaries and the development of the Wexford Wildfowl Reserve— represents a useful contribution and the Council of Europe have been furnished with relevant data.

Only one?

Has a decision been made by the Department to establish a national park in the Connemara area?

That is a separate question.
