Vol. 277 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pollution Control.

45.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will ensure that industries seeking to locate their plants in this country will have the standards of pollution control to which they are required to conform in their own countries.

It is a matter for the planning authorities to prescribe standards of pollution control. Under present procedures, the Industrial Development Authority will not pay grants to firms which fail to comply with the conditions regarding pollution control laid down by the planning authority concerned.

I understand that planning authorities in laying down conditions normally take account of the recommendations of the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards and An Foras Forbartha.

It is generally recognised that Irish standards of pollution control are at least as stringent as the standards operating in other countries.
