Vol. 278 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Animal Feed Substitutes.

119.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that a study on the use of substitutes in animal feed has been published as No. 130 in the EEC Informations Internes sur L'Agriculture series; the extent to which the recommendations of this study are applicable to this country; if he has any proposals for the implementation of suitable recommendations; and if he will have a summary of the study translated and made available to Members of the Oireachtas and the interested public.

A copy of the document referred to has recently been received in my Department. In order to reduce the Community's dependence on imports of protein concentrates in particular, the study suggests increased production of cereals, grass, proteins based on agricultural products and industrially produced prime feeding stuffs. While the suggestions are in line with our general approach in this matter, the document will be examined in detail in my Department.

An English translation of the document is being prepared by the Commission. I will arrange to have copies provided for the Houses of the Oireachtas as soon as it becomes available. Copies will also be made available on request to interested parties.
