Vol. 278 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pig Production.

137.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries his policy in regard to pig production in Ireland in the light of the Pigs and Bacon Commission campaign to promote pig breeding.

I agree that there is room for an expansion in pig production based on efficient enterprises of economic size. I have no doubt but that farmers with such enterprises who continue in the business, despite the market fluctuations that inevitably occur from time to time, can look forward to a very fair average return on their investment.

I am delighted to hear that, coming from that side of the House, because when we were looking for something we were told a different story. I am delighted to hear that there is confidence in the pig industry.

It is pleasant that the pig industry is brightening up so much. I appreciate Deputy Callanan's interest.
