Vol. 278 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Speed Preventive Ramps.

46.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will arrange for the erection of speed preventive ramps at the entrance to all housing estates throughout the country.

The question of providing or requiring the provision of ramps would be a matter for the local authorities in the first instance. In my view the value of such ramps would be limited, and would not justify their costs to public funds. The ramps could, also, increase hazards to occupants of vehicles. Alternative more effective means of combating traffic hazards in housing schemes are available including layout of schemes so as to reduce pedestrian/vehicle conflicts, provision of ways reserved for pedestrians, road designs which discourage speed, etc.
