Vol. 278 No. 4

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Factory Closures.

23.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of factories which closed during the period April, 1973, to February, 1975; and the number of redundancies which resulted from these closures.

Information is not available to me in the precise form asked for by the Deputy but in the period April, 1973, to December, 1974, my Department was notified of 16,624 qualified redundancies of which 8,112 were in the manufacturing industries.

The sectors reporting the greatest incidence of qualified redundancies were: clothing, 1,647; textiles, 1,496; metal and engineering, 1,392 and food 1,081. These four sectors accounted for a total of 5,616 or 69 per cent of total notified redundancies in the manufacturing industries.
