The total number recorded by the National Manpower Service as having registered for, but not secured, apprenticeships is, 2,868. Of this number over 800 are boys who first registered in 1973 and who, when contacted in 1974, opted to remain on the register in the hope of getting an apprenticeship. The situation about placement in apprenticeships in the latter half of 1974 was of course adversely affected by the unfavourable employment situation.
