Vol. 278 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Postmen's Working Week.

18.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when the five-day week will become operative for provincial postmen.

At present about one-third of provincial postmen have a five-day week. It was introduced for them on foot of an agreement reached at the departmental conciliation council in 1972 which provided for the introduction, where practicable, of a five-day week on a staggered day-off basis subject to certain conditions, which included the maintenance of service on six days of the week. There is a further claim now before the conciliation council that certain staff, including provincial postmen, be given a Monday to Friday five-day week. That claim is being examined at present and it would be inappropriate for me to comment on it while it is under consideration by the conciliation council.

Is the Minister aware that the times of delivery in Dublin, since the introduction of the five-day week, seem to be rather disparate in the sense that there can be a couple of hours difference in delivery between one morning and the next?

If the Deputy brings to my attention particular cases I will be glad to have them investigated.

I am the particular case but I do not want to make too much noise about it.

I will look into the matter.
