Vol. 278 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Arigna Crow Coal.

30.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the processes or methods for the utilisation of Arigna crow coal that were considered by the ESB; if consultations were held with any individuals or bodies outside the State and, if so, the dates; and if the advice and comments given will be made available to Members of the Oireachtas.

I am informed by the ESB that the board have had under consideration from time to time all appropriate conventional processes of proven merit for the utilisation of Arigna crow coal.

During the period 1961 to 1964 a British firm of consultants were engaged on two occasions by my Department to advise on the technical and economic possibilities of utilising the reserves of crow coal in the Arigna area for the generation of electricity. Also, a Dutch mining consultant was engaged in 1962 to examine the possibility of improved mining methods for crow coal. I would be pleased to send copies of the reports submitted by these experts to the Deputy should he wish to have them.

The board have also informed me that they recently received a further proposal about supply of crow coal from Arigna Collieries Limited. They are now engaged in a further assessment of the possibilities of utilisation of crow coal in the light of this proposal.

Has there been some change recently?

Did the Minister say he would send a copy to the interested Deputy or Deputies?

I said "Deputy", but if other Deputies are interested I will send copies to them also.

May I have a copy?
