Vol. 279 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Worker Participation.

15.

asked the Minister for Labour if he considered the desirability of making known the Government's attitude to worker participation on boards of management in semi-State concerns or in private commercial undertakings and concerns which have been given or guaranteed State aid; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government are committed to the introduction of worker participation in State enterprises and the election of worker representatives to State boards. Legislation is in the course of preparation.

Union and employer consultations have already taken place on the subject of worker participation in the private sector of the economy.

The State does not make its aid policy conditional on the degree of worker participation in the enterprises.

Can the Minister say whether it is the intention of the Government to appoint any directors to any bodies of the type mentioned in this question pending the enacting of legislation?

State enterprise and the appointment of directors is outside the scope of my area but, in direct relation to the question, legislation is in the course of preparation to permit of the election of worker directors to State boards.

When will this legislation be introduced?

Very shortly.

Can we expect it during this session?

It will be introduced very shortly.

(Dublin Central): I presume this legislation will be mandatory.
