Vol. 279 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

35.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether his attention has been drawn to the chronic shortage of water experienced by the residents of the Orwell Park and Willington developments at Templeogue, County Dublin; the steps that will be taken to alleviate the position; and whether the residents who are severely affected will be obliged to pay any water rates to Dublin County Council.

36.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether his attention has been drawn to the fact that many of the residents in the Orwell Park and Willington developments at Templeogue, County Dublin, are without adequate water supplies for washing and sanitary purposes; and whether, in view of the distress and obvious health hazards being suffered, he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to answer Questions Nos. 35 and 36 together.

The provision of a water supply is a matter for the local authority. However, I understand that the county council consider that the position in the areas mentioned by the Deputy is generally satisfactory, except during periods of peak demand when pressure drops below the desirable level and have advised that the problem will be remedied shortly when a new pipe laying scheme under construction is completed.

There is no provision for waiving water charges in the circumstances of such a case.

37.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he will sanction moneys for Knockgraffon group water scheme, Cahir, County Tipperary.

I take it the Deputy is referring to the Masterstown group water supply scheme which will be supplied from the Knockgraffon trunk main. A total State grant of £3,570 was allocated to this group in February, 1975. I understand that work on the scheme has not, as yet, commenced but will do so soon. The grant will be paid in instalments according as the work progresses.

38.

asked the Minister for Local Government the position regarding the proposed augmentation of the Charleville water scheme, County Cork.

The Cork County Council are reviewing and updating their proposals for this scheme at the request of my Department.
