Vol. 279 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Retail Prices.

66.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in respect of the following items, he will state their retail price per normal household unit on 1st March, 1973 and on the latest date for which figures are available and the items and dates in respect of which price increase orders were made by him: butter, milk, cheese, eggs, bread, flour, biscuits, margarine, stewing beef, cooked sliced ham, tea, instant coffee, sugar, baby powder, toilet soap, toilet rolls, washing powder, jam, marmalade, chocolate bars, catfood, note-paper, turf briquettes, coal and domestic bottled gas.

The reply is in the form of a tabular statement which with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

The Deputy will appreciate that it is possible to give definite retail prices only where maximum prices orders were in force at the dates mentioned in the question. Of the products listed in the question, only milk and bread had maximum retail prices fixed by order at 1st March, 1973. Comparable prices for these items at 1st March, 1973 and at present are set out in the tabular statement.

As regards the remaining items listed, while it is not possible to give retail prices which would be applicable in all circumstances, the Prices Inspectorate undertook surveys of supermarket prices of all the items listed, except coal and bottled gas, in February, 1973 and March, 1975 and the results of these surveys are set out in the tabular statement. The statement also gives comparable retail prices for coal and bottled gas and also sets out the items and dates in respect of which maximum prices orders were made.

Following is the statement:
