Vol. 279 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Jurors' Expenses.

94.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has any proposals to increase the expenses paid to jurors for their services; and, if so, when these proposals will take effect.

Legislation is being prepared in my Department to deal with various aspects of the jury system and I expect to be in a position shortly to bring proposals before the Government. Until the matter has been considered by the Government I am not in a position to say what may be proposed in relation to the making of payments to jurors.

(Dublin Central): When the proposals are being published I hope they will include far more people on jurors' lists. At the moment small traders are being taken away from their business and it is deplorable.

I can reassure the Deputy on that point. I cannot be more specific in advance of the report.

(Dublin Central): I am glad to hear it.

Put a large number of women jurors on.

I cannot be specific but I think there will be a general widening of the system.
