Vol. 279 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Water Schemes.

4.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding the Pigeon Hole group water scheme, Cong, County Galway.

Since my reply of 10th December, 1974, to a question from the Deputy about this scheme, the Department of Lands, Forest and Wildlife Service, have confirmed their permission for the use of the Pigeon Hole as a source for this scheme subject to the preservation of the amenity of the area.

The group have been advised to seek quotations for the necessary materials and carrying out of the work so that firm costings may be determined and the appropriate grants allocated.

When did that notification go out to the group?

I have not that information here but I believe it was roughly about one month or five weeks ago.

About two weeks ago?

How will this matter be affected by the Wildlife Bill which will be introduced in the Seanad shortly?

It will not be affected at all. This question refers to a water supply.

It is like the Coalition plans which are in the pigeon hole.

5.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding the proposed Spiddal regional water scheme, County Galway.

I received a request from Galway County Council on Monday the 7th instant for a provisional order declaring that the proposal to abstract water from Lough Boliska for the purposes of this scheme, may come into force. This is at present being examined.

Will the Minister give a guarantee that this matter will be dealt with immediately? It is urgent.

This originally came into the Department in September, 1972. The Deputy can be assured that I have been pursuing this matter and that I ironed out a number of problems which it seemed could not be overcome. There will be no unnecessary delay.

In view of the unsatisfactory nature of the Minister's reply, I should like to give notice of my intention to raise this matter on the Adjournment.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

The Minister's remark was uncalled for and shows his lack of knowledge of the situation.

It is sufficient for the Deputy to indicate to the Chair his intention to raise the matter on the Adjournment.

This area was in the Deputy's constituency when he was on this side of the House and apparently he did not want to clear up the matter. The Deputy will not get away with any smart aleckisms.

The Minister will be smart once too often.
