Vol. 279 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Schools.

10.

asked the Minister for Finance the primary schools in County Kerry which will be extended and improved during 1975.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance the areas in County Kerry where work will commence on the building of new primary schools during the current financial year.

Mr. Kenny

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 10 and 11 together.

Arrangements are being made for the erection of new schools at Killarney (St. Gertrude's Convent), Killarney (Convent of Mercy), Valentia (Ballyhearney), Ballinskelligs, Ballylongford and Kilgarvan and for the extension and improvement of existing schools at Tarbert. Fossa, Tralee (Parochial), Kiltallagh and Ballybunion Convent. It is not yet possible to say when work will commence at any of these schools.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say whether or not it is a fact that none of these proposals will commence during the present financial year?

Mr. Kenny

I could not tell the Deputy that because I have already given the answer that it is not possible to say when work will commence.

The Parliamentary Secretary must be aware that the purpose of my questions was to find out exactly what work will be started on schools in Kerry during the financial year.

Mr. Kenny

I have given the information that arrangements will be made for the erection of these new schools. It is not possible for me to say when work will commence.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that it is very likely that many of the schemes mentioned by him will not be started during 1975? Would he confirm whether or not this assumption is correct?

The Deputy is repeating the question.

Mr. Kenny

I do not know about the Deputy's assumption. What I am told is that arrangements have been made for the erection of these new schools but I cannot say with the information I have at my disposal when they will commence.

Next Question.

I am not satisfied with the reply. I asked specific questions as to where work will commence in 1975 and I have not got the answer.

Mr. Kenny

With the information I have at my disposal I cannot say. The Deputy must remember that there is a great deal of complex matter to be dealt with. There is the question of architects, contractors, managers, contributions. All these things must be brought into consideration before one can specify a date when work will commence.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary, on behalf of the Government, saying that no guarantee can be given as to whether any of these works will start during 1975?

Mr. Kenny

I never said anything of the sort. I have just told the Deputy what is in the reply and I am telling the Deputy the complexities. Some day he may be over here and then he will realise that if the money was on the table——

Next question, please.

Mr. Kenny

If the money were on the table it might begin again for a year.

It is a question of finance.
