Vol. 279 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Architectural Heritage.

55.

asked the Minister for Education if, in order to ensure that everyone will have the opportunity to appreciate the cultural values and historic interest of Ireland's architectural heritage, he will arrange to have this subject included in an appropriate manner in all educational programmes.

Mr. R. Burke

It is implicit in the school curricula at all levels that pupils are encouraged to study and appreciate our cultural and architectural heritage. I am satisfied that these matters can be catered for adequately within the framework of the existing programmes for environmental studies, history, geography, civics and art.

In addition, my Department encouraged schools to participate in the special competitions organised in connection with European Architectural Heritage Year by The Irish National Committee for the European Architectural Heritage Year, An Taisce and the European Schools Day Committee.
