Vol. 279 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - NUJ Press Card.

73.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the fact that the Press card of the National Union of Journalists states that it is recognised by the Garda Síochána, he is satisfied that gardaí in all districts and sub-districts throughout the country are familiar with the card; and if, in order to co-operate with journalists engaged in professional duties, he will arrange to have a photostat or other copy of the press card circulated to all district stations and sub-stations.

I understand that what the Press card states is that it is recognised by a number of organisations, including the Garda Síochána, as establishing the identity of the holder as a Press representative. I am informed by the Commissioner that he has been unable to find any record that the Garda were approached by the NUJ in connection with this matter. However, if the NUJ now so request, and can supply the necessary copies, he is quite willing to have copies circulated to members of the force for their information.
