Vol. 279 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Maternity Hospital.

91.

asked the Minister for Health if he will consider the possibility of building a maternity hospital on the site for St. Laurence's at Cabra Cross, Dublin, in view of the urgent need for maternity beds on the north side of the city.

I do not think that a new maternity hospital on this site is needed. Two schemes at present in planning will provide additional maternity beds in north Dublin. These are a new maternity unit at James Connolly Memorial Hospital which will have 80 beds, with provision for a possible expansion to 100 beds, and an extension at the Rotunda Hospital which will provide 56 additional beds and ancillary facilities. These schemes, it is expected, will meet future needs but the position is being kept under close observation by my Department.
