Vol. 280 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - NBA House Sales.

48.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make a statement on profit-taking by the National Building Agency in the sale of new houses to industrial workers.

I am informed by the National Building Agency that in calculating sale prices for a scheme of new houses provided for industrial workers, the agency take into account all items of prime cost—land, building, public lighting, landscaping, and so on —together with the amount necessary to meet the agency's overheads in the design and administration of the scheme. No element of profit for the agency is included in their sale prices.

Will the Minister have a look at the prices now being asked by the NBA for houses constructed in Galway for industrial workers? It is strongly believed that there is an effort on the part of the NBA to take a profit. I would like him to satisfy himself that this is not so. I have very strong suspicions that the allegation is correct but I would like the Minister to investigate it and have a calculation made by experts such as surveyors. If he is satisfied with the result I will accept his word but I am afraid there has been an attempt to take a profit.

I think Deputy Molloy is referring to two houses which recently went back to the NBA in Galway.

I have not got the details here. I can get them.

That might be the best thing. Generally speaking, it is not the policy to have a profit on them. That is not the idea but there are certain things and I would prefer if Deputy Molloy would give me the details or come up to my office and I will talk to him about it next week.

What is wrong with those two?

There is nothing wrong with those two. I will talk to Deputy Molloy about it.
