Vol. 280 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fermoy-Mallow Road.

51.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will enable Cork County Council to improve the road between Fermoy and Mallow during the summer and autumn months to ensure that it is better fitted to carry the greatly increased sugar beet traffic from County Waterford and from north-east Cork during the coming winter sugar manufacturing campaign; and if he will make a statement on the failure to provide adequate grants for improvement of this road in the light of the closing of the rail service between Mallow, Fermoy and Waterford.

I have already informed Cork County Council that a grant of £30,000 is available to them for improvement works on this road in 1975. This brings the total of grants allocated by me since March, 1973, to Cork County Council in respect of the Fermoy/Mallow road to £106,075. I would remind the Deputy that in reply to a question on 3rd March, 1970 the then Minister for Local Government stated categorically that there had been no promise of a special grant for this road.
