Vol. 280 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Postmen's Pensions.

33.

asked the Minister for the Public Service if he will consider granting pensions to retired part-time auxiliary postmen.

The pension scheme for non-established State employees, agreed with trade unions and staff associations in 1970, does not cover auxiliary postmen and other part-time staff and no alteration in this arrangement is contemplated. I might mention that these employees receive retirement gratuities in addition to pensions payable under the Social Welfare Acts.

Would the Minister not reconsider his decision in that regard?

The present scheme is one that was agreed with the trade unions and staff associations in 1970. We have not received any representations for an alteration of the arrangement so, accordingly, no further alteration is contemplated. Of course we will certainly consider any application which may be made about it.

Would the Minister not agree that most auxiliary postmen would not be members of trade unions?

I do not think that is true. It is important to remember that employees receive retirement gratuities in addition to their entitlement under the Social Welfare Acts.

Will the Minister have another look at it?

Of course. I look at everything.

That is about all.
