Vol. 280 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meteorological Service.

23.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether any publications have been issued by the long range forecast section of the meteorological service; and, if not, why.

No. Long-range weather forecasting is part of the current research programme of the meteorological service. Experimental forecasts have been prepared but the accuracy achieved to date is not adequate to justify publication. Research carried out in other countries and techniques being used are also being kept under review.

Have we available to us information from satellites from other countries which might make this system possible, which I understand has not been very successful in England?

No. The meteorological service here consider that to publish long range weather forecasts now, of which they were not satisfied with their accuracy, would not be in the best interest of the public and they have decided not to do it at the moment.

24.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether approval has been given for the purchase of a computer for the meteorological service; and its estimated cost.

Approval has been given for the purchase of a computer for the meteorological service at an estimated cost of £132,298.
