Vol. 280 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - South American Shrimps.

24.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make a statement on the fact that South American shrimps are being sold in hotels as Dublin Bay prawns.

No complaints have been made to me that South American shrimps are being sold in hotels as Dublin Bay prawns. The Merchandise Marks Acts make it an offence to apply a misleading trade description to any goods and this includes misleading statements as to the nature or as to the place of origin of the goods. It must be borne in mind, however, that many foods and other goods include place-names in their title as a means of indicating the special nature of the product and not as an indication of the place in which they were produced: Examples would be Cheddar cheese or Jaffa oranges. The international Codex Alimentarius Commission has, in fact, agreed that the description "Dublin Bay prawns" may be applied to shrimps of the species nephrops norvegicus.
