Vol. 281 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Leavers.

31.

asked the Minister for Education the number of school leavers in the country this year who will be available for employment.

Mr. R. Burke

The estimated number of school leavers in 1975 is 52,500. This estimate applies to leavers from full-time education. A number of these leavers will continue in part-time education e.g. apprenticeships.

Is the Minister concerned about the lack of opportunities in employment for school leavers this year and has he had any discussions at Cabinet level to provide opportunities for them or to show concern for the dismal future that seems to face these young people?

Mr. R. Burke

The matters to which the Deputy has referred are the subject——

This is a statistical question.

Could the Minister repeat the end of his reply?

Mr. R. Burke

The Ceann Comhairle says that it is not relevant.

In other words, you are trying to cover your words and now want to avoid——

Mr. R. Burke

If the Ceann Comhairle will allow it to be discussed, I shall certainly engage in dialogue with regard to it.

Surely it was a relevant question.

Mr. R. Burke

I do not think it is, but if it is decided that it is, we can discuss it.

You mumbled your reply and took the Ceann Comhairle's shield after that.

Mr. R. Burke

On this side of the House, we are inclined to be in order if at all possible.
