Vol. 281 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Transport Service.

247.

asked the Minister for Education if he will authorise CIE to have an eight-year-old child in County Meath (name supplied) collected by the school bus, as he must now travel three miles on a public road in order to get school transport and consequently has not been able to attend school since 5th May, 1975.

This child's home is 10.7 miles from the nearest national school under Church of Ireland management. The nearest pick-up point on the special transport service to that school is 2.7 miles from his home.

I have given special and sympathetic consideration to the request that the transport service be extended to pick the child up at or near his home, but I regret that the issues involved, including expense, are such that I am not in a position to grant that request.

The Deputy will appreciate, I am sure, that it is unfortunately not possible to provide a door to door service for all children who are eligible for free school transport.
