Vol. 281 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post Office Staff.

29.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of temporary staff taken on by his Department last summer; and the estimated number for the forthcoming months.

My Department do not recruit temporary staff specially for employment during the summer. Recruitment of temporary staff occurs throughout the year and its incidence depends mainly on the need for local labour for engineering works or to provide for absences on sick or annual leave not covered by reserves, or for additions to night operating staff at telephone exchanges to meet growth of traffic.

The Minister has not indicated if any temporary staff will be taken on this year.

I stated in my reply that the Department do not recruit temporary staff specifically for the summer months. Temporary staff would be recruited in each local engineering district where they were short of permanent staff. There is no central policy either to recruit or not to recruit.

Will the Minister indicate the procedure adopted with regard to advertising for temporary staff?

It depends on the type of staff being recruited. Temporary junior postmen are recruited locally for temporary work. They are recruited through the employment exchange or the National Manpower Service.
