Vol. 282 No. 4

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take business in the following order: Nos. 4, 10 (resumed) and 9 (resumed). No. 9 (resumed) will be taken at 4 p.m. Private Members' Business from 6 to 7.30 p.m., No. 27, by agreement. I should like to inform the House that on Thursday, June 26th, the Minister for Finance will move financial resolutions.

In effect a new budget.

If No. 10 finishes before 4 p.m. does this mean that No. 9 cannot start until 4 p.m.?

I do not anticipate that No. 10 will finish before 4 p.m.

In respect of the announcement by the Taoiseach about financial resolutions being moved, may I take it that that will be followed by the usual debate on the lines of a budget debate?

The assumption is correct.

So long as it does not follow the lines of the petrol tax which is what we are concerned about.

In view of the horrific events over the weekend in the North of Ireland will the Taoiseach, at some stage during the Dáil sitting this week, indicate to the House the communications, if any, he has had with the British Government expressing our concern at the mounting tone of sectarian violence in the North. I say that in view of the fact that this has already been discussed in the House of Commons and will be raised tomorrow at the Convention. It is important that we have an opportunity of hearing what steps our government have taken to communicate our concern to the British Government.

It is not the practice to disclose communications between the two governments.

Have our Government had any communication with the British Government over the weekend in regard to this matter?

The reply I gave covers that.

It does not. The Taoiseach owes it to this House to indicate what communications, if any, he had with the British Government in relation to this matter.

It is not in order at this stage.

Apparently, the Taoiseach does not intend to allow us to express our view of the concern we should express to the British Government in spite of the fact that every other House is discussing the matter. We are reneging our responsibility.

There is an orderly way of dealing with this.
