Vol. 282 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Temporary Field Officers.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if the persons appointed as temporary field officers on the 1975 labour force survey by the Central Statistics Office were unemployed at the time of appointment; and if he is satisfied that all these appointees will be able to devote themselves full-time to their tasks.

The field officers for the 1975 labour force survey are temporary interviewers and these are in fact part-time posts. The Deputy may, however, have in mind the full-time field officers appointed recently for an EEC survey of labour costs and the structure of earnings. Of the four persons appointed, two were out of work, one was a housewife and one was a retired person. The Central Statistics Office have advised me that they are devoting themselves full-time to their duties.

Would the Taoiseach not agree that in the present unemployment climate, if unemployed persons who are capable of doing the jobs present themselves as being anxious to do work of this nature, we should endeavour to employ them?

I agree with the Deputy except that it was not laid down for the particular work, which is for part-time posts, that the persons applying should be unemployed.
