Vol. 282 No. 6

Excess Vote, 1972-73. - Vote 34: National Gallery.

Cavan): I move:

That a sum not exceeding £176,000 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of December, 1975, for the salaries and expenses of the National Gallery including certain grants-in-aid.

I have already referred to how efficiently the National Gallery is run. I should like to know if the money coming from the Shaw Fund is running down?

The administration of that money is something I do not come directly in contact with. The money in question is used to purchase works of art and does not go into the general expenses of the gallery. Speaking entirely from recollection there may be some diminution in the income.

If that is so we should increase the amount we are giving. A marvellous job is being done in that gallery.

I agree with the Deputy in regard to the National Gallery and I have taken note of his remarks.

Vote put and agreed to.
