Vol. 282 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Heart Disease Deaths.

2.

asked the Minister for Health if he has noted the very substantial increase in the death rate from diseases of the heart of men aged 45 to 64 years in the period 1960 to 1973; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The statistical information which I recently circulated to Deputies showed that the death rate from diseases of the heart for men aged 45 to 64 years increased between 1960 and 1973 from 424 to 550 per 100,000 men in that age group.

The Medico-Social Research Board in co-operation with the World Health Organisation have carried out research in Dublin into the factors associated with morbidity and mortality of heart disease. This research has confirmed the findings of similar research carried out in other countries, that heart disease appears to be closely related to elements of our modern way of life such as smoking, diet and lack of exercise.

In dealing with this problem emphasis is being placed on the education of the public on the steps which can be taken to reduce the risk of heart disease. My Department, in co-operation with the Irish Heart Foundation, have issued leaflets and have engaged in television and Press advertising aimed mainly at young people and designed to promote attitudes towards positive health early in life.

A major step has been the recent establishment of the Health Education Bureau which is now responsible for promoting all health education campaigns. I expect that the prevention of heart disease will be high on their priority list.
