Vol. 282 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Health Statistics.

10.

asked the Minister for Health if statistics relating to health and medical activities in the EEC are available to him and his Department; and, if so, the circumstances under which and the manner in which he acquires them.

Statistics concerning health activities in countries of the EEC become available to my Department through a number of sources. The principal sources are:

1. The World Health Organisation. The regular publications of the WHO contain statistical material relating to the member states, including the countries of the EEC, and are sent to my Department by virtue of this country being a member of WHO. These publications can be purchased through the Stationery Office in Dublin.

2. The EEC. The annual Reports on the Development of the Social Situation in the Community contain some statistics relating to health and medical activities. This publication may also be purchased from the Stationery Office in Dublin.

3. EEC committees and working groups on health matters. Officers of my Department take part in the work of a number of such committees dealing with specific health questions. A variety of statistical material may be produced to assist the members of these committees. This material is not normally published.

4. Individual countries of the EEC. Statistical material is sometimes obtained by direct contact with agencies in other EEC countries, particularly the United Kingdom. Much of the United Kingdom material is published.

Will the Minister, the Parliamentary Secretary and the Department make information available to Deputies who seek it through correspondence or through questions in the House?

Willingly.
