Vol. 283 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Data Transmission Units.

42.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if it is proposed to carry out studies for the estimation and evaluation of the country's future data communication needs; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A study of the kind in question was carried out in 1972-73 by consultants commissioned by 17 European countries, including Ireland. It covered data communication needs up to 1985. The consultants sought information from some 7,000 potential computer users. They forecast, inter alia, that the number of data transmission units in Ireland would increase over ten-fold between 1972 and 1985. A committee of the countries concerned intends to have the results of the study reviewed and the material brought up to date periodically.
