Vol. 283 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teaching of Philosophy.

26.

asked the Minister for Education if it is his intention to add philosophy as a subject to the programme for post-primary schools; and if it will be included as a subject for the leaving certificate examination.

Mr. R. Burke

A working party was set up some time ago to investigate the feasibility of introducing philosophy as a subject in the leaving certificate curriculum. Further consideration will be given to the matter on receipt of a report from the working party.

How soon does the Minister expect to get this report because, as the Minister knows well, I have been interested in it for a long time and I am on record.

Mr. R. Burke

Yes, I am aware of the Deputy's interest in this. I would imagine that the report should come forward some time this year.

The Minister is also aware that in the queue for admission there is the subject Irish Studies?

Mr. R. Burke

Yes, I am so aware.

Mr. Kitt

Is it intended to add philosophy as a subject for the Leaving Certificate examination?

Mr. R. Burke

As I said in reply to Deputy Wilson, further consideration of that matter will have to await receipt of a report from the working party.
