Vol. 284 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School De-rating.

32.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will recommend to all local authorities that they de-rate all voluntary secondary schools.

Local authorities are obliged by law to levy rates on all hereditaments in the valuation list which are not designated under statute by the Commissioner of Valuations to be exempt for rating purposes.

Are there discussions going on between the Valuation Office and the Minister's Department about this matter?

There have been discussions going on about the derating of certain buildings which people feel should be derated and the rating of other buildings which are not rated at present and which some people feel should be rated. It is not very conclusive.

Would the Minister support the suggestion in the question?

I do not think I should at this stage because I have not got all the information required.
