Vol. 284 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Registered Private Cars.

1.

Mr. Kitt

asked the Taoiseach the total number of private cars registered for the periods (i) January to July, 1974 and (ii) January to July, 1975.

The total number of private cars registered for the first time in the period January to June inclusive 1974 was 33,387. The corresponding provisional figure for 1975 was 30,364.

For the month of July, 1974, the figure was 6,694.

Has the Parliamentary Secretary any comment to make on this reduction in the figure?

As the Deputy is well aware it is not the function of the Parliamentary Secretary to make a comment.

Would he not agree that the high taxation element in the purchase price of cars as imposed by the Government has resulted in this reduction?

The Deputy is entering the area of policy. That would be a matter for another industry.
