Vol. 284 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Limestone Workers.

44.

asked the Minister for Finance the steps he is taking to protect the jobs of longterm service workers at a limestone works in County Cork (name supplied) where redundancy is threatened.

Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann Teoranta inform me that the limestone works in question have incurred very heavy continuing losses in recent years and, unfortunately, there does not appear to them to be any prospect of an improvement in this position. The company now intends to rationalise operations at the works in an effort to reduce these losses. I understand that this will mean that some 19 jobs may be affected but, in the short term, about half of the above workers will be given employment in the sugar and food factories at Mallow until January, 1976. It is understood, however, that no final decisions have been made in this matter as yet and discussions are at present taking place between the trade unións and the company.
