Vol. 284 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clonmacnois Improvement Plans.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the delay in carrying out all the general improvement plans at Clonmacnois, Athlone, County Offaly, which are needed to facilitate visitors to the monuments.

Mr. Kenny

The delay in implementing plans for improved visitor facilities at Clonmacnois is due to the fact that a property came on the market which offered scope for an improved layout. This property comprising a house and garden was purchased and has now been adapted for use as a reception building for visitors. The purchase of some additional land, to enable the reception facilities to be extended, is at present under consideration.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say if there has been any improvement in the incidence of larceny of ancient objects from places like Clonmacnois in recent months?

Mr. Kenny

I cannot give any more information than I gave on the last occasion, but there is definitely larceny from many sites throughout the country. I could not give the Deputy any specific list of objects.

All I am asking is whether there has been any general improvement in the position?

Mr. Kenny

One cannot very well estimate because thievery is a most peculiar profession. Things which are not very prominently displayed are taken and they are not missed.
