Vol. 285 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clonmel Army Canteen.

23.

asked the Minister for Defence the improvements he intends to make to the Privates' Canteen at Kickham Barracks, Clonmel, County Tipperary; and when these improvements will take place.

The redecoration of this canteen is now almost completed. Planned improvements include new cooking equipment, provision of heating and refurnishing. These improvements will be carried out in the near future.

Would the Minister say when will this work be started?

I wrote to the Deputy in September and told him that as a result of his representations and comments on the Defence Estimate in Mayo I would have the complaint examined. Towards the end of September the Deputy wrote to me again. The work was started after that and I am keeping my eye on it.

What amusements will be available in the canteen at this centre which is one of the main recruiting centres in Munster?

What does the Deputy mean by amusements?

I do not necessarily want horse riding there.

Not in the canteen.

Will there be darts, billiards and so on available?

I have no details.

Would the Minister consider putting in such facilities in the canteen for the young soldiers?

I will not interfere with what might be the decision of local people in this regard. Of course I will consider it.
