Vol. 285 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Vehicle Lighting.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he intends to adopt the proposals of the European Council relating to side lights, rear lights and stop lights for motor vehicles and their trailers in the form presented by the Commission to the Council on the 31st December, 1974.

The proposals to which the Deputy refers come within the development of a series of EEC directives based on manufacturing standards and aimed at the elimination of technical barriers to trade. General responsibility in relation to such directives rests with the Minister for Industry and Commerce, whose Department has been informed that, from the road safety aspect, I would not object to their adoption should the Council so decide. I understand that the proposals do not present any problems for the Minister for Industry and Commerce from the industrial standpoint.
