Vol. 285 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Sector Employment.

14.

asked the Minister for the Public Service if, in the light of a previous reply, he will indicate the progress that has been made to minimise restrictions on the type of employment in the public sector that may be undertaken by men or women, but not both.

Following consultation with Departments it has been agreed in principle that, with a few exceptions, civil service grades should be equally open to men and women. Some grades previously restricted to men have already been opened up to both sexes. The practical difficulties associated with others are being looked into.

Could the Minister give some indication as to when all forms of employment will be available?

I am sorry to say it is not possible to do that because the examination involves consultation with innumerable staff associations and the Deputy will appreciate it is not possible to say when negotiations and consultations will be concluded. As far as the Government and I are concerned, we will press ahead so as to achieve as soon as possible the removal of any discriminations which are no longer necessary.
