Vol. 285 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf Banks.

26.

asked the Minister for Lands the number of applications in respect of turf banks or plots; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

(Cavan): The extraction of the information requested would involve the examination of a very large number of files in both the head office and the local offices of the Land Commission entailing an expenditure of time and effort which, I am sure the Deputy will agree, would scarcely be warranted.

I can say, however, that general interest in turf banks is nothing like what it was some years ago. The Deputy can be assured that where there is local demand for turbary the Land Commission will allocate on a permanent or letting basis any bog in their possession in that district or, if necessary, acquire and develop new bog, if such is available.

I personally am disappointed with the figures. Am I to take it from the Minister that every effort is being made to allocate turf banks to those who want them?

(Cavan): The Deputy may take that.
