Vol. 286 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meat Preservative.

23.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to reports (details supplied) that the United States Department of Agriculture, having conducted widespread research into the use of sodium nitrite as a preservative in cured meats, particularly bacon, and having established that it is a serious cancer producing agent, plans to ban its use; and if, in view of the fact that the substance is used in similar fashion in this country, he will indicate the plans that exist to bring the practice to an end.

I have seen references to the reports in question. I am making inquiries from the United States authorities to obtain full details of the position. When these are available, I will consider them with my advisers, including the Food Advisory Committee, with a view to deciding what, if any, action may be necessary.

24.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that it is contended by some experts that the use of coffee with bacon or cured meats containing dangerous preservatives intensifies the danger of such preservatives; and if he will undertake to have this matter investigated as a matter of urgency.

I have seen reports to this effect, and am seeking the advice of the Food Advisory Committee on the matter.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say when he expects to have this report?

I can assure the Deputy I am well aware of the important work the Food Advisory Committee do and of their efficiency and when I have the report I shall communicate with the Deputy.
