Vol. 286 No. 2

Written Answers. - Factory Safety Standards.

184.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will ensure that persons involved in manufacturing vinyl chloride are adequately protected; and if standards have been laid down with regard to preventative procedures to be adopted by all undertakings exposed to risk by this substance.

Vinyl chloride is not manufactured or polymerised in this country. However, as I indicated to the Deputy in answer to a question on 13th June, 1974, the plastic material poly vinyl chloride (PVC) which is made from vinyl chloride, is processed and moulded in various factories here. Inspectors of my Department have tested the atmospheres of such factories and so far all tests have proved negative. The indications so far are that our workers are not in danger, and that the existing provisions of the Factories Act, 1955 afford adequate protection having regard to the nature and extent of present industrial activity. While special regulations laying down specific standards have not been made, the possible need for such standards is under review.
