Vol. 286 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Home-Produced Protein.

17.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if, having regard to the high cost of protein concentrates for animal feeding, measures for the development of home-produced protein are being examined by his Department; and, if so, if he will give particulars of these measures.

Extensive trials on the production of field beans and peas are being carried out and rape production has been introduced on a commercial scale in recent years. Research work on the evaluation of extracted grass juice and on the production of high protein cereals is also in progress. Dehydrated fodder and rape benefit from the price supports provided by the EEC.

Who is doing this work?

An Foras Talúntais. The two groups benefiting at present are the people making the grass meal and those growing grain.

As a matter of interest, might I ask the Minister is there any documentation available on this work?

I believe there is.

Might I ask the Minister to let me have it.

Yes, I will do that.
